China's ambassador to Canada accuses it of "white supremacy" and double standards in detention of #Huawei CFO Meng. hilltimes.com/2019/01/09/dou…
China Amb: "Without violating any Canadian law, Meng was arrested last month and put in handcuffs.... It seems that, to some people, only Canadian citizens shall be treated in a humanitarian manner and their freedom deemed valuable, while Chinese people do not deserve that."
This is so ridiculous, where to start. The CN govt's official position seems to be that Canada could never detain someone for extradition, even tho Canada has in the past detained people for extradition to China? Why shd any country ever extradite people to China?
How can China's Amb say this with a straight face? "in the case of detention of Canadian citizens in China who violated China’s law, those elites completely dismissed China’s law and presumptuously urged China to immediately release their citizens."
China still has not revealed any specific info abt what Kovrig and Spavor are charged with, given them a judicial hearing or a lawyer. What is presumptuous abt criticizing this as "arbitrary."?
Meanwhile, Meng had a judicial hearing in open court, with a lawyer, and with the evidence revealed agt her. She is free on bail and living at home, but it is Canada (Canada!?) that is violating her human rights because of racism?
China's Amb: "In such a context, the rule of law is nothing but a tool for their political ends and a fig leaf for their practising hegemony in the intl arena. What they have been doing is not showing respect for the rule of law, but mocking and trampling the rule of law."
This last claim is the really dangerous one, b/c it defines "rule of law" as nothing but a Western tool. Sadly, too many folks in Sest and in China are susceptible to this propaganda strategy.
I also still can't believe the Chinese Ambassador to Canada is charging Canadians with racism for handcuffing someone. As if the Chinese govt would never dare handcuff a Canadian in China? You have got to be kidding me!
I hope Chinese-Canadians and Chinese-Americans will not buy into the Chinese govt's attempt to play the "race card." But I am afraid too many will.
At the very least, no country should ever agree to extradite anyone upon China's request. This would, in the Chinese govt's own terms, violate intl law. Australia, please take note!
