Now that calls for the resignation of Secretary of Public Safety in PR Hector Pesquera are growing on the island amid heinous shootings on frequently-transited areas, I would like to go back & remember some of his comments after Hurricane Maria, bc the Internet does not forget:
This with the assistance of @latinorebels and journalists of @cpipr who had the foresight of compiling it in a story. On Oct. 30, 2017, he said in an interview that anyone questioning the methods to count Maria's dead was employing "Oliver Stone theories." latinorebels.com/2017/11/21/pue…
Also notably in Nov. 2017 at a press conference: "When Pesquera was asked if the government should investigate the deaths that happened right after the hurricane ... he answered: “Why investigate?'" latinorebels.com/2017/11/08/for…
That same month, he had an interview with @DavidBegnaud where he said he had "yet to see any real information about uncounted deaths" despite several media reports suggesting the toll was much higher than initially reported.
Reminder that the PR govt. did not acknowledge excess hurricane-related deaths until nearly a YEAR after the hurricane. These are just a few highlights that stand out in my head. PR Twitter, please chime in if you think of others. nytimes.com/2018/08/28/us/…
