NY TV debut 1/13/54 from 6:15 to 7:25 pm on WCBS' "Early Show.'' Retitled CARAVANS WEST for TV, 1934 western with silent star Blue disappeared from TV by the late '50s. Resurfaced under original title a decade after copyright expired in 1962 on PBS series "Matinee at the Bijou.''
NY TV debut 1/13/54 from 11:30 pm to 1 am on WCBS' "Late Show.'' Besides Paramount's Greys, Fox's Chans were also arriving, both sans original studio logos. Earliest surviving episode (1931), with Lugosi, Robert Young and Hawaiian locations, vanished from TV for decades.

1/13/74 from 6 to 9 pm on WPIX. Russell writes in her memoirs she didn't want to do 1947 O'Neill epic, but Dudley Nichols called in a favor after he directed her in pet project SISTER KENNY. Audiences avoided both RKO releases, Favorite Roz lost Actress Oscar to Loretta Young.

1/13/2010 at 8 and 10 pm on "TCM Feature Presentation with Robert Osborne.'' Second night of "Shadows of Russia.'' Co-programmer @selfstyledsiren and me also suggested two more NINOTCHKA clones -- JET PILOT and IRON PETTICOAT -- but sadly, neither was available at the time.
Blue, whose father was part Cherokee and Osage, was a major Warner star of the 1920s, including Lubitsch's 1924 comedy. He was ubiquitous at WB in the '40s both in character roles (the sheriff in KEY LARGO) and unbilled bits (a heckler in MISSION TO MOSCOW).
Oland's second Chan film, following the lost CHARLIE CHAN CARRIES ON (1931). CHARLIE CHAN'S CHANCE (1932) CHARLIE CHAN'S GREATEST CASE (1933) and CHARLIE CHAN'S COURAGE (1934) also believed lost. Lost CHARLIE CHAN IN PARIS (1935), not in original TV packages, surfaced in 1970s.
