This isn't really a good "gotcha." This hernia clinic, in my hometown of Thornhill, is one of a very small number of private, for-profit clinics that were grandfathered into Ontario's socialized health system.
Fair enough. But the gotcha is "he's an enemy of socialized medicine but look he's going to the land of socialized medicine." Shouldice is not socialized medicine -- it's a little bastion of capitalist medicine Canadian politicians allow to keep existing.
Kind of funny: Canada's late social-democratic leader Jack Layton was also criticized for going to this hernia clinic, but from the opposite perspective, since he's a champion of Canada's public system but the clinic is private (via @AaronWherry). theglobeandmail.com/news/national/…
This is accurate. The clinic accepts Ontario’s public health insurance, but also you can just go pay privately. (This concludes my hernia-tweeting.)
