someone was talking to me about derbycon - the fact that it being the last year, and the conference historically not being good about safety or handling incidents (not to mention all the harassment) this year might be the most wild - they have nothing to lose. wow.
then realized another thing Derbycon did with the blog post. The way they wrote it to blame SJWs and talk about all the negativity THEY have endured, they are creating pity for themselves. So this year people will be more hesitant to bring up issues because "they work so hard"
I don't deny Derbycon works hard. However, EVERY SINGLE CONFERENCE works hard. It's hard work!!

This is NOT an excuse for not being responsible for safety. This is NOT an excuse to be able to dog whistle alt-right and misogynists talking about SJWs. This is NOT an excuse.

Having been impressed by the Glass trailer, we watched the first two movies in the Eastrail 177 trilogy, despite some misgivings about the subject matter.

I liked Split more than I expected and Unbreakable less.
I'm kind of offended by the people who told me, even back in 2000, that Unbreakable was the best comic book movie ever. It was so badly paced and badly written. It needed a punch-up by someone who understood comics.
Like, Glass did not talk about comics the way a person who reads comics would. It was more like the Big Bang Theory version of it.

I've had my 2nd coffee and it's time for another #infosec rant. This one is aimed, with love, at my white male colleagues in this biz. I love that many of us are helping our brothers and sisters build their careers in infosec. But PLEASE be careful with the advice you give out.
Before we white dudes give career advice to others, we have to consider that the tech industry (including #infosec) still has HUGE double standards when it comes to race and gender. Thus, what worked for ME might actually be harmful advice for a woman or for a black man.
One obvious example is: "You don't need a college degree." I'm a college dropout myself - I did 2 yrs of a CS degree before deciding that school wasn't for me. By the time my class graduated, I'd already co-founded @rapid7. Great!

I cringe at how much sincere, well-meaning, yet ultimately WRONG #infosec advice I gave out while working as the founder/VP Eng of a major security vendor.

When I left at IPO, I knew I needed a broader perspective. (1/N)
It’s too easy for someone in #infosec to call themselves an “expert” or (god forbid) a “thought leader”. Very few of us so-called experts have a rigorous background in security. My background is software. Most of us just jumped in early and learned as we went.

#infosec is so broad, it covers so many technical and non-technical disciplines, that most of us who were experts in ONE area (like vulnerability mgmt in my case) have very deep expertise in that ONE area, but we’re amateurs in most other areas. #SecurityExperts

1/ Met a gentleman this morning outside our agency building today. Enjoyed some small talk; turns out he just got picked up for a dream infosec job. His first actually. Had joined the USAF in aircraft maintenance, pushed himself to learn IT after hours.
2/ You could tell within the first 30 seconds how passionate he is about this field, and how his intelligence and drive would take him far. By 60 seconds, you could also see his self-doubt & tendencies towards Impostor Syndrome.
3/ Ended up spending nearly 30 minutes just mentoring. He had seen me around in cyber (new here myself), and heard my honestly undeserved nickname “MegaMind”. Turns out it wasn’t entirely a chance encounter.
