someone was talking to me about derbycon - the fact that it being the last year, and the conference historically not being good about safety or handling incidents (not to mention all the harassment) this year might be the most wild - they have nothing to lose. wow.
then realized another thing Derbycon did with the blog post. The way they wrote it to blame SJWs and talk about all the negativity THEY have endured, they are creating pity for themselves. So this year people will be more hesitant to bring up issues because "they work so hard"
I don't deny Derbycon works hard. However, EVERY SINGLE CONFERENCE works hard. It's hard work!!

This is NOT an excuse for not being responsible for safety. This is NOT an excuse to be able to dog whistle alt-right and misogynists talking about SJWs. This is NOT an excuse.
Everyone that feels sorry for Derbycon is being emotionally manipulated.

How about feeling sorry for people being harassed? How about feeling sorry for the "SJWs" that are now being targeted? How about feeling sorry for women and enbies, expecting a safe conference?
Just because someone does a lot of work or good work does not mean they are exempt from responsibility.
Just because a conference is fun, good for careers, a great experience for most, and run by Good Guys does not exempt it either.
You can enjoy something AND ask it to be better
Derbycon isn't for several more months. all of this anger at SJWs is gonna build up the rest of the year. Lots of time for more alt-right to pick it up. Lots of time to plan. Lots of time to find out who to target. Lots of time
i wonder if there's any liability here for writing a blog post in a way that specifically targets certain people, knowing that alt-right groups will pick it up. And then, as we know, not banning or removing threats to safety.
if you feel sorry for derbycon, watch your wallet.
infosec folks love to study scams & social engineering but some trust people too easily & can't pick out a scam.
people running scams are well liked. they are very good at get sympathy & parting people from their money
