Listening to parliamentlive.tv/Commons ... lots of good discussion on the root causes of brexit e.g. rampant neoliberalism and the consequences of this. Very encouraging ...
... but equally there is a disturbing discussion that brexit has opened up divisions. Those divisions were there, they had just been ignored. Brexit has simply put a magnifying glass on the monstrously unequal and divided society that is the UK.
Well, @theresa_may has come out battling for the Withdrawal Agreement. A fine speech ... but now, amendment f on the order paper - publications.parliament.uk/pa/cm201719/cm… - seems like a bit of waste of proceedings but they have the right.
Ayes to the right 24, noes to left 600 ... well, that was a bit of a waste but then they had the right. Now, to the main motion.
Well, well ... 202 ayes to the right, 432 noes to the left. A significant blow to the Withdrawal Agreement. Not really surprising as it's a fairly awful deal (despite some pockets of advantage) and yes, we've just wasted more time. This should make an interesting few days.
I didn't expect the defeat to be this crushing. Now point of order, oh ... and @theresa_may is opening up a "no confidence" motion. Challenging Labour on this.
Oh, @jeremycorbyn is killing it now - catastrophic defeat, failed process, roundly rejected, delay and denial, end of the line, two years of failure ... brilliant stuff ... tables a motion of no confidence. YES.
This one tweet is almost certainly destined to become Cameron's legacy -
Equally, this particular tweet by the PM is bound to suffer the same fate -
X : Do you think the PM will lose the no confidence vote?
Me : No, well ... I'd be surprised. It's a question of self interest. Ideally we should have a 2nd chamber, a citizen's assembly, selected by sortition and it should decide such things. But that's the far future.
X : Do you think @theresa_may was the wrong person for the job?
Me : In the Conservative party? No, I think the PM has done reasonably well given difficult circumstances. I don't view the Withdrawal Agreement as the right deal and I do view Corbyn as the better choice.
... negotiations like this are always going to go to the wire. As much as I would prefer Corbyn (for all the reasons of the social issues, a more pressing concern than Brexit), you have to admire the PMs growing fortitude so far. I hope she continues it.
X : Do you think there will be a #PeoplesVote
Me : Oh, do you mean is this all statecraft? I have my suspicions but I hope not. It's often impossible to determine individual actors actions.
X : Do you think the EU will re-open negotiations?
Me : That's a tricky one, they've painted themselves into a bit of a corner if they do given all the statements made.
X : Does that mean crashing out with a no deal?
Me : Well, there are other compromises possible but no deal remains an options. I like options. They're good things in a negotiation.
