X : Do you think the whole world will be overtaken by serverless in 2025?
Me : In tech, yes, it'll be everywhere. it'll be like cloud was in 2017, endless business articles, lots of noise.
X : But will everyone be running serverless?
Me : Oh, no. That takes much much longer ...
... some companies are 15 - 25 years behind what they see as "leading edge" which is normally a good decade or more being the actual leading edge. So expect even in 2025, a few stalwarts to be going - "I don't think serverless is the future", same happens today with cloud ...
... also, in 2025 you should expect lots of companies declaring they're getting into serverless as if they're leading the pack. It's like companies today announcing they're going to go "data centre zero" as thought this is an amazing insight ... wow, really, that's so 2008.
X : But, it'll be everywhere?
Me : Oh yes. It'll have taken over the whole tech world bar the stalwarts and to be honest they'll just sound as odd as CIOs going "I don't believe in the cloud" today.
X : Lots of CIOs don't believe the cloud is the future.
Me : I know ...
... show them something beyond serverless like conversational programming e.g. Jarvis - - and say - "are we really going to worry about cabling up racks in a world that looks like this" or wait until CFO finds out about billing per function / capital flow.

A top 20 in DevOps and now ...
... a top 20 in cloud - ... this is very kind but most of my work is in mapping, strategic gameplay, Gov, China, serverless and now ... culture. It's very kind to be included but I do feel a bit of a fraud as I don't spend enough time on these topics.
X : How do you end up on these lists?
Me : No idea. I tend to be vocal on the obvious which often causes conflict i.e. private cloud is daft unless you're larger than Netflix, containers are a future invisible subsystem, DevOps is the new legacy, OpenStack is a dead duck etc.

X : Are there alternatives to the x-axis of a map?
Me : There are different terms for each of the forms of capital. Or you can mix and match, e.g. for mapping ethics or the law then the following might be useful. Personally, I just use activities to describe stage I to IV.
X : How do I determine how evolved something is?
Me : That's a matter of discussion with others, the use of the cheat sheet (attached) and comparison to many other maps. It's an imperfect process but useful in its own right.
... mapping is not really a solo activity, it's most effective when done with others. Also, it's not possible to create a perfect map, so don't worry about that. Finally, it's not a one off exercise but a continual process of observation.

Me : My pleasure. The battery had burst, busting the keyboard and the trackpad. All replaced and fixed now. I also upgraded your OS to High Sierra and tweaked a few other bits.
X : Thanks. Any chance you can install windows 10 on it?
Me : No
X : Why not?
Me : Your mac book is over nine years old ... Apple tries its damned hardest to make you buy a new one and not have an upgrade path. To get windows 10 running, I'd have to hack bootcamp into giving you things it doesn't want, mess around with partition tables ...
... I mean, it's bad enough on physical hardware when the Macbook screams "tiny fiddly screws, why not buy a new one?" but bootcamp is usually all out war against old versions. Haven't been down the path for some time.

Me : No. Buy a PC. Use Ubuntu.

(2) The MSM critiques of the President's statement focus on peripheral aspects like his use of exclamation marks. Reflect on that, against the incredibly serious points made about Iran, international terrorism, global oil prices etc.

Which side is talking about what MATTERS?
(3) Every point POTUS made was already known to me, & to you, if you've been following actual events & trends, instead of the MSM spin.

YES the murder of Mr Khashoggi was AWFUL & it is NOT condoned by Trump, the US, or me, or you.

A President must consider the whole picture.

#serverless advocates - we are doing something wrong. I have been putting this off for a long time but I really think it is important and has to be said. Warning: LONG thread.
The trigger for this thread was a talk I gave at #DevOpsDays Edinburgh. It wasn't the talk per-say, but the whole conference experience (which was awesome, but that's a topic for another thread).
Here I am, with around 200 people who really care about the DevOps culture and practices - and so little of them has any experience with serverless tech.
