My understanding of where things stand is slightly different. short #thread
First, the EU is in the waiting mode (again).
Second, whereas EU officials follow Westminster's dynamics and understand that that there is no parliamentary majority for a no-deal scenario they are also speeding up preparation for this outcome - as it could happen even by accident
Third, EU leaders will formally look into extension issue only when and if the UK asks for it. True, Brussels bubble is wondering how that would interact with forthcoming EP elections (see my previous exchange with @GuitarMoog ) but leaders COLLECTIVELY have not spoken up.
Fourth, if the UK asks for an extension it will have to face a following question from EU leaders "Dear UK what is it that you want to achieve with an extension"? Any attempt just to buy time will not do the trick.
Fifth, if UK said that it wanted to hold a referendum it is likely that EU leaders would provide time for that but I find it unconvincing that it could drag even by next year. Leaders want to move on to other business and Brexit drama is a clear distraction.
