On the American side, we have three, possibly four or more, explanations of the failed summit in Hanoi. Pompeo, Bolton, and Trump have said several different things at different times. 1/
Trump makes decisions on the moment, does not discuss them in a way that Pompeo and Bolton can influence or understand them. His outbriefing is probably a mixture of misunderstanding and misdirection. 2/
Pompeo's primary motivation seems to be to keep his boss happy, which is difficult to do when you don't know what the boss wants. 3/

1. I've been thinking about a project for a while. We need new thinking about nuclear weapons - I am not satisfied with either the conventional ideas about deterrence or the ban the bomb approach.
2. I don't get far just thinking about it, though. It's a hard problem, which is why none of us have done very well at producing that new thinking. So I propose to consider it in a continuing Twitter thread. It will take more than just tonight.
3. I am going to raise questions and toss out some thoughts. This is not an invitation for simple answers, nor is it a request for articles to read. I've read a lot, and I haven't seen what I think is needed.

Why would someone tweet "Keep in mind that we can destroy the world" as a New Year's greeting?

That's a question a lot of us were asking yesterday. Here are some thoughts, not quite what @AthertonKD was asking for.
People need to feel good about what they are doing with their lives. The military necessarily includes killing other people. They have to come to terms with that as a good thing. A lot of evidence suggests that killing other humans is psychologically hard for most of us. 1/
A lot of military basic training deals with the inhibitions against killing other humans. And sometimes killing other humans is indeed justified. 2/

i'd like to offer that this is one way of reading it and one that I support. however, i would also like to argue for the the semiotic reading of the maga hat and its bearers.
in fact, it's a pretty straightforward interpellation--that is, the way we fit ourselves & others into familiar scripts--because, quite frankly, trump & the maga types want us to see their signs--hats, shirts, bumper stickers--& have a particular cognitive & affective response.
by cognitive & affective response, i mean to say the way it makes you think and feel. i'm pretty sure they keep yelling "build a wall," "lock her up," "america first," etc. to induce a particular response among opponents & especially minorities.

Over the past few months I've seen a lot of headlines intimating that business investment is booming, and a lot saying that it's not. I was confused, so I looked into it bloomberg.com/view/articles/…
Turns out not to be any great mystery: capital spending looks great in comparison with 2016 and 2017. But by historical standards it's ... fine.
The capital spending dip in 2016 was mainly the oil and gas industry retrenching; its return to spending has been one of the big drivers of the capex rebound, as @RaphaelBostic explained last month frbatlanta.org/news/speeches/…
