Equating all anonymous sourcing is dishonest. Good reporters who use anonymous sources show their work and do not quote people anonymously who have no proof of their claims.
This same reporter questioned the buzzfeed story - which relied on multiple sources with expertise in the subject - but simply wants us to believe this story about a single unnamed rancher who thinks they saw a prayer rug.

It is frustrating to see reporters who know better exploit the public’s wide misunderstanding of how anonymous sourcing is done to gain some points. ProPublica has tried to illuminate the use of these sources, but the industry does need to do a better job explaining what it means
