In the 50's and 60's, the top marginal tax rate for J. Paul Getty was between 70 and 92 percent and he was still the richest human alive.
Resistance to tax increases is about the principle of the thing. The people Ocasio Cortez' tax plan would affect will never feel the pinch.

They just don't like having a big number when they could have a huge one.
They will still be the richest people on Earth in the richest country on Earth.

people complaining about the high taxes of the 50's and 60's are literally saying the richest man alive didn't have enough money

Let's talk about puberty blockers.
If a prepubescent youth comes out as trans, or as being uncertain or confused about their gender, they can delay the onset of puberty with puberty blockers.

This is not the same thing as transitioning.

1/Recent Saez/Zucman on 70% top marginal income rate has been met w/ similar reactions by several econs (see and gregmankiw.blogspot.com/2019/01/who-is… ).

I don't understand how they draw clear separation b/w “economic” & “political” argument, so help me figure out
2/ Mirrlees’s work (hailed by Mankiw as “econ”) used theoretical argument to make *normative* point that planner maximizing social welfare function (very specific type of social goal embodying very specific def of fairness) in specific env shouldn't implement prog income tax.
3/Saez/Zucman use econ history argument to make *positive* point that US high mg income tax rate was successfully implemented since 30s to quell inequality w/o hurting growth, *normative* point that it’s good goal, *political* point that it safeguards democracy against oligarchy

Prior to 1986, the federal tax code subsidized apartment construction. For example, someone spends $15 million to build apartments. Every year, they could use depreciation to reduce their taxable income by $1 million, even if actual value of the building didn't go down. 2/
The top marginal tax rate back then was 50%, which meant that prior to 1986, the federal government was paying for half the construction cost of every privately developed apartment building in the USA. 3/

The @OECD released its revenue statistics for 2017 last month, and as always the the U.S. was near the bottom among wealthy nations in tax revenue as a share of GDP. So we're a low-tax nation! Which doesn't mean everybody's taxes are low here. bloomberg.com/opinion/articl…
Here's the taxes/GDP ranking for 2017. The U.S. came in 30th out of 35 OECD countries.
Still, lots of taxpayers in the U.S. don't think they're getting a great deal. One reason is that, unlike in many other wealthy countries, taxes don't cover health care and higher ed.

In fact it would probably take very little of their money, because few people who make more than $10 million a year receive it as earned income. This is why in the 1950s, when the top marginal tax rate was 94%, the *effective* tax rate was more like 45%.
I'm not opposed to @AOC's idea of creating more tax brackets that go up to 70%, but if we REALLY want to shift the tax burden to the rich, we should 1) raise capital gains taxes, 2) eliminate step-up in basis, and 3) end all income deductions that aren't targeted at the poor.
Also, this won't really make the tax code more progressive, per se, but: return-free filing. Now.

The way the government requires you to duplicate the work they already do calculating your taxes is ridiculous and wastes millions of man-hours every year.

Muhammad ibn Abd al-Wahhab was born in 1703 in 'Uyayna. Born in the context of waning Ottoman power, he believed Islamic societies had become too permissible and therefore weak. A student of ibn Taymiyyah, he preached a puritan Islam that interpreted the religion in novel ways.
For example, he broke with the tradition of following a madhhab (though he himself was Hanbali) and instead promoted emulation of the first and second-generation Muslims as “salaf” or ancestors. Hence Salafism (Wahhabism is derogatory).
