This letter is tantamount to “I have Black friends.” Instead of fighting to say this isn’t who we are, why not pause and say, “You know, this actually IS who we are and how can we change it?” That should be the starting point. Not denial.
This behavior didn’t happen because that is not who you are. It happened because that is exactly who you are. I bet if you get out of your bubble, stop making lists to make yourself feel good and go talk to the 11% of Black people and ask them who you are you’d be surprised. 🙄
And mind you this is what he calls a diverse community. Just start with the basic truth. Just start there. Just say this is a city where everyone is predominantly White. Let’s start there and work our way up. But he won’t do that. Trust me. They aren’t ready to face the truth.
