Dr. King taught us that when we stop trying to be better citizens and improve our govt for all, we decline. That lesson has been painfully obvious over the last 20+ years in DC, where partisan nonsense fueled by mass media has turned America into bickering factions. 1/
We are better than this. We can do better than this. Progress doesn’t require “my way or the highway” attitudes, it requires thoughtful compromise. Governing isn’t about sensationalist drivel spewed for a sound bite, it’s about statesmanship and leadership. 2/
I say to @GOP: What’s ‘conservative’ about creating chaos in the govt and economy?

What’s ‘conservative’ about tossing away Constitutional roles and allowing an out-of-control executive to go unchecked?

The founders would be disgusted if here today. All of them. 3/
I say to @TheDemocrats: What’s ‘progressive’ abt gridlock?

What’s ‘progressive’ abt letting ideological kooks to undermine your party? Do you realize how much the GOP loves this? They don’t have to do a thing, Dems are trying run primary campaigns against other Dems! 4/
When we don’t strive to improve, we decline.

When we don’t strive to see each other as equal stakeholders in the advancement of the American dream regardless of political ideology, sex, race, religion, economic status etc; we decline. 5/
The choice to advance our country, or erase hundreds of years of progress, is entirely up to us. We own this govt. Its behavior is a reflection of our own, not the other way around. We set the tone. “Government of the people, by the people, for the people.” 6/
If you really want to honor Dr. King’s legacy, do so by demanding better of our govt, our media, and ourselves. Be kind, respectful, and steadfast. Reach across the aisle. Be a statesman & stateswoman. Don’t reward partisan hacks; punish them at election time. 7/
We’ve come along way in 242 years, and we still have a long way to go. But the journey is worth it. As is the effort to ensure we continue our great march forward towards being worthy of our founding ideals. 8/x
