E' solo in inglese

#Thread on #MLKDay2023 #MLK & The Poor People's Campaign:

The memory of King as an impassioned economic justice-warrior is continually threatened today by the oligarchs who remain in power. They instead take great pains to erase that part of King’s life from his legacy.
They attempt to silence his cries for a more monetarily equitable society. They deliberately obscure the final few years of his life. This sanitized, “white-washed” version of King purges the intense radicalism of the strike-leading preacher.
By his late-30s, King fully realized that social and political justice would always be predicated upon economics. Poverty, he understood, had to be eradicated. His speeches increasingly became threatening to the established American economic hierarchy.

Ronald Reagan was not a good President. In fact he was a monster that was totally owned by big business. They chose him because he lacked real principles, no moral compass or ethics. He was yet another President who said everything many people wanted to hear and then did the
opposite. He cut taxes for the rich for trickle-down economics, cutting social welfare spending, increasing military spending, and deregulating economic activity in the name of “free” markets. Reagan’s path to American greatness meant making rich people pay less in taxes,
giving poor people less help, building the imperial forces he used in foreign policy, and making life easier for the capitalist class. Reagan’s handling of the AIDS crisis in the 1980s, characterized by downplaying and ignoring the threat, is mirrored in how Trump has handled

On the evening of 4th April, 1968, #MartinLutherKing was assassinated in Memphis, Tennessee. On his death anniversary, we travel back in time to take a look at some moments & glimpses of his visit to India in 1959 (1/n) Image
In his own words, "For a long time I had wanted to take a trip to India....While the Montgomery boycott was going on, India’s Gandhi was the guiding light of our technique of non-violent social change. We spoke of him often...(2/n) Image

White friends, we cannot celebrate Martin Luther King's Jr's life without fully grieving.

We can't do it without lamenting Steve Bannon and Stephen Miller and Sebastian Gorka and Jeff Sessions and Mitch McConnell.…

We can't do it while defending the expulsion of immigrants and the denial of refugees.
We can't do it while waving Confederate flags and worshiping monuments to slavery's dehumanizing legacy.
We can't do it without mourning the young black men who still die without cause during traffic stops and officers who face no accountability when they murder them.

Image

Please, please, please 🙏 All friends of @blackboughpoems and everyone in the #writingcommunity and beyond - use your social media to post in support of anti-discrimination, anti-racism and equal rights. You can share this or post yourself. #BlackLivesMatter #MartinLutherKing... ImageImage
You can donate money to support voluntary organisations who support rights, write to elected representatives, march and protest (safely, eg. use PPE and socially distance) and speak to people you know who may have little confidence or knowledge on how to do this themselves. 🙏
Doing nothing, being silent on racism and discrimination, does not help fellow human beings who are going through terrible strife, injustice and brutal treatment.

On May 17, 1957 civil rights activists gathered at the Lincoln Memorial to demand federal action on implementing the 3 year old Brown v Bd of Education.
Southern states were resisting Brown by nearly every means, defying the Supreme Court & advancing white supremacy. At this rally 3 yrs after Brown, #MartinLutherKing gave his first speech before a national audience.
The speech he gave - “Give Us The Ballot” - positioned voting rights at the center of the struggle for civil rights. It remains one of King’s most important speeches. On this 65th anniversary of Brown, it resonates just as powerfully. Voting rights remains the linchpin.
