GDPR governs UX. Many in the industry are still in denial.
Industry is terrified of being GDPR compliant because that would entail letting about 2/3rds of users easily express their preference to protect their data instead of leaking it to real time bidding auctions. Research suggests only 1/3 of users want targeted ads. Let ‘em choose.
Cookie notices could look like this to be GDPR compliant:

“Do you want ads on this site selected for you based on your personal data? If not, ads will be placed for viewers of this site.”

[YES] ~30% will choose
[NO] ~70% will choose

In terms of data rights, North America is decades behind the advancements and progress of our friends across the Atlantic and elsewhere. @CommonsCMS in UK and #ETHI committee in Canada found themselves tugging at different strands of the same threads following the money and data.
It’s pretty exciting to watch these two committees share notes in public.

Reportedly the ICO received the passwords to seized CA/SCL servers recently. May help explain why “final” report seemed to exonerate LeaveEU. Evidence was not “found” then because they didn’t have all the passwords at that time. News of fines/audits today means they found stuff?

Most tech reporters still haven't discovered GDPR Article 8 and recitals 38 and 58. There's no way that teens 'consented' to the requirements that Sandberg pledged to honor in Brussels last year. No effing way. gizmodo.com/sheryl-sandber…
GDPR requires that disclosures and protections be age appropriate (38,58). Did any teens w/EU citizenship understand age appropriate language to inform a meaningful discussion with their parents? Was any technically verifiable consent granted? (Article 8)
When reporters seek out users of Facebook Research App are they afraid to answer important questions about consent? Regardless, any families with EU citizens that used this app should file a complaint with the appropriate Data Protection Authority.

This is a good question: what is the root cause of the lack of privacy online today? Why does media track so much? My personal take is that it boils down to browsers and mobile platforms. Not only is that the master fix, but it is within reach. Follow the thread❗👇
First, I have some assumptions that I want to ensure you know:
1) Without a free and well-funded press before long we'd have no privacy at all. This does NOT justify an exception regime for media, but it constrains the solution. Getting rid of media is not the right option.
2) I do not buy into strict deontologism. It's not enough to make a rule, we need to make it work. If you force people into a choice between the law and survival, don't be surprised that they at least bend the rules. If you incentivise defection, expect defectors.

This matters in a few ways. First, live chat and messaging are features of many kinds of products and services. So #ePrivacy jurisdiction may touch nearly every website, service, and gadget.
Second, #ePrivacy demands transparency for the middle part of a call, exactly where companies like @Amazon, @Google, @Skype and @SlackHQ create new value and new partner ecosystems. Translation, bots, commerce to enhance your conversation will need specific disclosures.

Facebook is confronting EU users a new “terms of service” dialogue that denies access until a user opt-ins to tracking for ad targeting, and various other data processing purposes...
These Terms refer to the “data policy” that says “we use the information we have about you – including information about your interests, actions and connections – to select and personalise ads, offers and other sponsored content that we show you.”
