"What we need is international cooperation. Nobody can solve the issues alone and nobody can benefit from the Arctic alone. " - Ambassador of Finland to the US, Kirsti Kauppi tells Sen. Lisa Murkowski and others on the Sen. Energy & Natural Resources Comm.
The undercurrent of today's messaging so far by those guests representing international interests (Denmark, Greenland also here today): The U.S. coming along willingly on the policies that will address Arctic issues seriously would be welcome but if not, they wont crumble.
"Under the framework of Paris Agreement, the beauty of the Arctic Council [was the] way we approached these problems – we consider very practical issues and concrete steps." (More on this in my story later)
"Even though we would like to see the US in the agreement; [the absence] isn’t an obstacle to taking concrete steps that would have a good impact in the Arctic." - Kauppi
