And this is why I can't take seriously the "Harris is a cop" crowd.

It would be one thing if they left it at just criticizing the cases where she didn't push back against DA misconduct. But no — they make sweeping statements like this that ignore her entire policy record.
This guy completely refuses to acknowledge, say, Back on Track. Or her being one of the first DAs to require body cams. Or her statewide programs on bias training for police. Or her making police shooting data public. Or her efforts to end cash bail in the Senate.
I am perfectly fine with debating whether Harris made mistakes, either prosecuting certain cases too hard or not pushing back enough against the misconduct of separately elected local DAs. But to claim she would "oppose meaningful criminal justice reform" is ridiculous.

There's a ton of misinfo going on about what's happening in Venezuela.

This is not a "coup". This is the National Assembly using its constitutional powers to remove Maduro for rigging the election and the judiciary. It's not that different from impeaching a president in the U.S.
What needs to be understood here is, the Assembly is the only branch of govt that was democratically elected.

Maduro's election was a sham. As was his creation of a puppet Supreme Court that tried to dissolve the Assembly. The Assembly alone is trying to establish rule of law.
Maduro is trying to convince the world that this is a secret plot by the U.S. to invade and overthrow him, and that the economic collapse and famine in his country are a result of U.S. sanctions that were designed to manufacture unrest.

Like clockwork, narratives are starting to cement about Kamala Harris' time as CA Attorney General, painting her as some sort of win-obsessed, out-of-control prosecutor.

I'm all for vetting her record but half of what I'm seeing her accused of is misleading or an outright lie.
The truth is that, while Harris was working in a hard-charging culture where she, as a woman of color, constantly was made to prove she was "tough on crime" by critics, her record as a whole shows she was one of the most liberal AGs in America.
On criminal justice, Harris developed the "Back on Track" anti-recidivism program, years ahead of when it became a fashionable issue.

She made data on police shootings public, and created a first-of-its-kind statewide program on implicit bias training for law enforcement.

I think once this whole crapfest is over, we need a serious discussion about this whole system of the government "shutting down" if we don't keep passing the same discretionary bills over and over and over again.

The whole idea is kind of nuts when you think about it.
In most countries, if the legislature doesn't pass a new budget, the old one is just automatically extended for another year.

So why don't we do it that way? It makes sense. I imagine if you asked a random person on the street, they'd just assume that's how it works here, too.
I think the best explanation is that having to pass continuing resolutions all the time is meant to force both sides to review everything, and negotiate with each other on their priorities going forward.

Not working so well now, huh? Not when one side is taking hostages.

One of the reasons charlatans like Jordan Peterson or Sam Harris are so successful, aside from the fact that their ideas reinforce the status quo, is because academia, as a whole, seriously undervalues vulgarization and popular education.
These guys can spout absolute nonsense about philosophy, history, sociology, etc. and no one challenges them because the people who actually work within these disciplines aren’t encouraged to spread that knowledge around.
Most academics don’t spend their time building meaningful relationships with communities outside the university, or learning to write in ways that are accessible to people without a degree, because that’s not what “counts” when it comes to getting a job or tenure.

Okay. So. It's time once again for me to do that thing I do: a deep dive into Trump's state of the union speech.
For new followers who've tuned in since the last time I did this, bear in mind I am not a factchecker. That's a different (though related) skill set and best done by people with the training, resources, and editorial oversight that I don't have.
What I do have is a very particular set of skills, skills I have acquired over a very long career, skills that make me a nightmare for people who don't like long, reflective Twitter threads or believe it's possible to overthink something.
