This WTO news item contains a lot of general statements of concern and good intentions. But deep down are links to documents on possible outcomes. Most interesting is a brief statement on launching talks on e-commerce (next tweet)

Some thoughts on Twitter comments today on no-deal Brexit and tariffs

1. Averages don't say much.

The EU's average AGRICULTURAL non-preferential tariff is about 11%.

But for DAIRY, the average applied to imports = 36% while at least one is…

…189%.

The impact is uneven

2. A lot of focus is on UK tariffs on IMPORTS from the EU, and the impact on food prices.

Sure, the impact on retail prices is less than the tariff increase.

And yes, the UK could scrap import duties. But have the trade-offs been discussed? Does any party have a mandate?

3. The focus on UK IMPORT duties under a no-deal Brexit, fails to look at the impact on UK EXPORTS to the EU, and on supply chains where paperwork and non-tariff barriers also increase costs.

The claim (false) — with "no deal" the UK can continue to trade with the EU on present terms for 10 years under an interim deal notified to the WTO.

Yes, GATT Art.24.5 has a 10-yr “reasonable length of time” for interim agreements

So, the first hurdle: the EU would have to agree.

In other words

1. There has to be a deal of some kind
2. The EU would almost certainly insist on a Withdrawal Agreement and backstop

If this is agreed, then no need for an interim agreement at all. But let's continue

We've heard a lot of general statements about the UK being more liberal in trade policy than the EU. We have seen precisely no realistic worked through plans to deliver this (a US trade deal is not necessarily liberalising, unilateral tariff removal is not going to happen)
Trade liberalisation is like removing red tape. Easy to talk about, hard to actually do. Remove some tariffs and you threaten domestic producers or developing country preferences. We haven't wanted to be more liberal on movement of people.
Yes we can be more trade liberal than the EU. Realistically the changes are unlikely to be dramatic. If someone says they will be then ask them for specific detail.

In a pre-emptive round, a VC pays up for the next round of funding before the company has hit a new milestone or new data exists to de-risk the company.
3/ A prime example of this is Bird, which is rumored to be raising a $2B valuation round just a few weeks after raising at $1B w Sequoia. Nothing material has changed, so an investor either thinks the company is mispriced or has FOMO. If Bird ends up worth $20B its a smart move

Okay. Three Billboards, again.
There’s two very dubious defenses I’ve seen over and over for this movie. The first one, of course, is that it’s full of moral ambiguity and nuance, and that the people who feel like its moral lens is blinkered/janky are missing what the movie is trying to do.
This is a bizarre argument, as nothing about this movie is subtle in anyway, and all its character details and plot points are dialed up to 10. It makes its points loud and clumsily and repeatedly.
