By October 2016, not only had Russia's involvement with WikiLeaks been widely reported, the intel community had already briefed Trump on Russia's efforts to interfere in the election—and officially accused Russia of doing so.

Oh, and the Trump team knew Russia was trying to specifically help them out, thanks to Rob Goldstone’s emails offering dirt on Clinton “as part of Russia and its government’s support for Mr. Trump.” themoscowproject.org/explainers/col…
So what did the Trump campaign do? Instead of alerting law enforcement, or the intel community, or the public, they directed Stone to ask WikiLeaks for more information that could help them out, then spent years lying about it.
