Anyway, his biography has never been vetted, and if Schultz does run for president I think there's a decent chance the scrutiny he attracts causes his campaign to collapse pretty quickly.

On the contrary, I’d say it’s the only explanation that really makes sense.
Again, as @maddow pointed out last night, Trump has a long habit of parroting downright obscure talking points that come straight from Putin, often referencing countries he probably didn’t even know existed.
And, as Chait himself notes, this comes right as Russia is about to declare they were always right to invade Afghanistan.

And Trump has already been caught trying to backchannel with Putin:

#Trump's last campaign rally of the 2018 mid-term election season is scheduled to start in about ten minutes. It's his THIRD rally of the day. Dude is likely exhausted and I doubt this rally will be less "speech" and more "incoherent tirade".
