We desperately need a Frodo. And possibly a Gollum. Some compare Trump to Gollum, but the thing about Gollum is that the fight against Sauron couldn’t have succeeded without him. There’s nothing redeemable about Trump.

Trump has some attributes of Gollum, like the incoherent speech patterns. But he’s not really an equivalent to Gollum in the novels, because he’s a master con man and Gollum is not. Trump is more like Wormtongue, leading America into darkness at the command of others.
The Republican Party has to be Saruman in this extended metaphor. The main enabler of the horror.
