You can learn to talk about a presidential race like this. I have, lord knows. But it’s best avoided.
Do you, as a person who lives and voted here, like the private health insurance system we have in the United States?
When your own kid sits in a waiting room one day, as a surgeon mends your grandchild’s broken leg, do you want your son or daughter to be thinking about the mad life-savings roulette game that depends on whether the radiologist who assists the surgeon is or is not “in network”?
If by chance you don’t relish that vision of the future, and want to see the private health insurance system changed, which of the politicians proposing to change it are likely to follow through in reality? Would they make good elected officials otherwise? Able to handle the job?
If you can ways to engage with policy, and the candidates’ fitness to implement their policies, in a way that isn’t entirely detached from people’s lives and the country’s future, I at least will commend and admire you.
