The @PoliceNG spread their nets already when the video went viral having received it as a recent event. Eye witness account of the actual event asserts that it was a Kidnap case of October/December 2018 where one of the victims died in captivity. (Short thread)
The kidnappers still wanted the ransom from the family despite the death of one of the captives abducted along Ondo-Benin expressway, close to a village controlled by another Fulani Gang. So the family got the DSS involved and played along.
Owing to trust issues the whole gang of 6 (2 from Ondo, One Igbo, 2 Edo & led by another from Zamfara state) had to come down to Benin to receive the N3.5m ransom as negotiated according to the report. The DSS were on ground for the 5day operation to Rescue & apprehend the gang.
It wasn’t clear if they were armed in the video as this was shot after the gang were disarmed and rounded up with the gang leader shot in the process in an attempt to escape based on eye witness account at the scene of the event. So the video shows the gang as apprehended.
One of the victims survived till this day and is currently recuperating from the trauma. The case was tried in court and the 5 surviving gang members were sentenced to death and currently on death row (in prison custody). So this is not a civilian/security authority engagement.
