@eredmil1 @ohohlfeld @Inria OK, so here we go! @Inria is a French National Research Institution in Informatics and Mathematics. Researchers get a tenure the day they are hired. They are public employees of a French State, the salaries are well-defined by the state and not negotiable... Thread 1/n

@eredmil1 @ohohlfeld @Inria When you start a permanent research position in about 5 years since the start of the PhD, you get ~2400$ per month net. It's mush smaller than US but count different aspects of life. This is enough to live comfortably in France. 2/n

Social security system is very good, health coverage is great (maternity leave: 1 month before, birth (any kind), 3.5 months after is 100% paid by the health system, from the day you start working). 3/n

@eredmil1 @ohohlfeld @Inria Students: you don't get any immediately, but you apply for funding and get it (excellent US PhDs would not have troubles getting it). Many options possible: French local projects, Inria projects, local doctoral school funding. For me personally, this is not a problem. 4/n

@eredmil1 @ohohlfeld @Inria Teaching: Inria researchers are not obliged to teach. I mean, at all. We are researchers 100% of the time. We do teach when we want (and to have a contact with the students) and we get paid extra for every teaching hour we do. n/n
