Teaching Nat Turner's Confessions (the original, not Styron) today. I had forgotten that Nat fully admitted his role in the Southampton uprising, but pled Not Guilty, "saying to his counsel, that he did not feel so."
If you haven't seen it, I highly recommend this 2003 documentary on Turner's Rebellion directed by Charles Burnett. It's a wee bit dated, but my students always find it really engaging. (For now, it can be streamed for free on Amazon prime.) pbs.org/independentlen…
Which reminds me, do any #twitterstorians out there know what became of "Will, the executioner?" He was one of Nat's closest associates, but is not listed as having been tried. Was he ever apprehended? Was he killed?
