Book #10 of 2019. Jack Kelly, The Edge of Anarchy: The Railroad Barons, the Gilded Age, and the Greatest Labor Uprising in America. I very rarely histories not written by academics, but this was worth it.

Largely, it's interesting for me to read as a writing exercise in how popular historians write narrative histories. But the history itself is strong.
Mostly, this is a very good way to get your dad or whoever who isn't going to read an academic history to engage with a story on the evil of Gilded Age capitalism. George Pullman was so awful.

Man who routinely appears on Tucker's White Power Hour decides to call me a racist for noting that Zaid Jilani is an idiot for defending the racist Ralph Northam.

But yes, I obviously I only disrespect a racist apologist jerk who now routinely writes at The Federalist, an actual fascist publication, because he is a person of color who is supposedly a truth-telling heterodox thinker. Compelling as always Glenn.
And never mind of course that I used to be on an e-mail list serve with Jilani and he said some of the dumbest, most ridiculous and absurd things I have ever read on a routine basis and with the self-confidence that only a dim man can have.

This Day in Labor History: February 2, 1848. The U.S. and Mexico sign the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo, finalizing the U.S. theft of half of Mexico in the unjust Mexican War. Let's talk about how American colonization transformed the work life of farmers in New Mexico.
The Spanish (and then the Mexicans after independence in 1821) settled the far northern lands of New Spain/Mexico through creating land grants. Some of these were given to an individual, others to a group of families to start a village.
It took a good long while to get most of these going because the northern edge of New Mexico was also the land of the Comanches, who in the 18th century were the stronger nation.

i'd like to offer that this is one way of reading it and one that I support. however, i would also like to argue for the the semiotic reading of the maga hat and its bearers.
in fact, it's a pretty straightforward interpellation--that is, the way we fit ourselves & others into familiar scripts--because, quite frankly, trump & the maga types want us to see their signs--hats, shirts, bumper stickers--& have a particular cognitive & affective response.
by cognitive & affective response, i mean to say the way it makes you think and feel. i'm pretty sure they keep yelling "build a wall," "lock her up," "america first," etc. to induce a particular response among opponents & especially minorities.

...it was time we heard that unless we start learning how to employ proper English most of our allies will simply, summarily dismiss our efforts. He really felt he was doing us a favor.

When he received the pushback he so earned, the number of other 'allies' on that page .../3

 First off, #OptionSelling by itself is NOT an edge.

Simply by selling an instrument that decays in value over time, doesn't give one an edge towards profit. It is accompanied by short gamma and rising #volatility working "against" you.

1/ I finished @nntaleb's new #book Skin in the game, and here are my learnings, insights and notes.

Warning: this thread is going to be huge.
2/ Human systems are systems within systems, interacting in complex ways. No article / paper / logic can capture all interactions of such systems and their evolution over a non-trivial amount of time.

So fear one shot, large scale interventions (such as invasions, UBI, CRISPR)
