I would love to see more eng leaders execute on & write about how to:

- surface the true costs of build vs buy in an ongoing, systematic way
- streamline procurement & remove perverse incentives
- reward senior eng for successful outsourcing of tools, tricky vendor integrations
... like seriously, this is green field territory for a hungry young(1) engineering manager or director who is itching to make a name for themselves.

i will happily counsel you, braindump everything i know, and assist you in any way i can. we *need* this.

If you work for an employer who you believe does not care about employees' dignity, well being, and personal development, please do the world a favor --

QUIT.
Quit if others are taken advantage of, even if you personally are respected and treated quite well. Help amplify their voices if you can, etc, but in the end we highly paid, highly skilled folks have got to stop lending our skills to sociopaths.
(I didn't echo the original tweet point about job security; I don't think that's a reasonable expectation for an employer. Jobs come and go, as they must to remain competitive.)

I'm going to ignore the grade-A well actuallying going on here and say that I am just realizing what an astonishingly large % of folks deeeep in the bowels of current distributed systems problems... all seem to be working on CI/CD systems. Like, it just keeps coming up.
Several honeycomb customers. (Travis-CI case study is a good one: blog.travis-ci.com/2018-10-31-tra…) After every talk I hear from more folks being driven slowly mad trying to tend their CI/CD systems.
I mean, it makes sense... you get the long thin tail of errors that only ever happen once, arbitrary uploaded code snippets, noisy neighbors and uncleaned states and cotenancy and coordination problems out the ass...

Guess I'm just surprised at all the ultra bespokenesss of it.

"there are spikes in our graphs all the time, we used to just ignore them. now, with honeycomb, we just break down or use bubbleup and go 'oh, it's just slow for that one user' or 'just that endpoint is spiking'. it's so easy.

this also reminds me that i have done a poor job of alerting y'all to one of the most exciting things we've ever shipped, bubbleup (formerly known as drilldown).

everyone always used to ask, can you tell me what to look at? and i would sigh wearily and say no.

The key question for DTC brands is the trade off between:

+Fulfillment & shipping cost savings
+(Arguably) shoppers down the purchasing funnel vs. FB

-almost complete loss of your brand experience at Amazon
-14+% rake
2/ My take: don’t take it! (though personally, I might be better off financially if you did 😁)

@melanietravis puts it perfectly in the article “I think of Amazon as one side of retail and the Shopify-and-Facebook brand as the other. I think they can coexist.”
3/ Amazon is likely threatened by DTC brands. The sales from the $xB DTC explosion of the last few years - Allbirds ($100M?), Harry’s ($250M?), DSC, Warby, etc. have bypassed the Amazon platform (although still small compared the the $xxxB through Amazon).

Tips for new mini painters: thread.
Badly painted minis are better than unpainted minis. Raw metal and grey plastic don't belong on the gaming table. At the very least, color them in.
ALWAYS prime your figures. It gives you an even canvas to paint on and the paint will stick better.
For plastics and metals I use mat enamel rattlecans. For bones you MUST brush on the first later in undiluted acrylic. Add water and it will bead off the surface.
