SCOOP! Written Answer busts open the post no-deal Brexit disaster awaiting the haulage industry: "Department received applications for a total of 11,392 permits from 1,991 operator licence holders. 984 ECMT annual permits have been allocated to operators."
theyworkforyou.com/wrans/?id=2019…
If that looks confusing: hauliers requested 11,392 permits to be able to keep driving in the EU post-Brexit in a no-deal scenario. The DoT only has 984 to give out. That's not even one per FIRM applying. Over half the companies that requested permits won't get any at all.
Put another way: the industry said "We need 11,392 permits." It's going to get 984. So there's a shortfall of 10,408 permits (91%). And if you think the firms were being over-cautious, think again - over 50,000 UK-registered trucks normally make journeys to the EU and back.
This is, of course, Chris Grayling's department again. They might as well give him the "Most Incompetent Minister of All Time" award now, because he's so far ahead of the field nobody will ever catch him.
Do you think the haulage industry's going to take this lying down? Have you already forgotten the fuel strikes?
(BTW, not to blow my own trumpet, but I'm the first person to break this story. Guess nobody else is reading the Written Answers.)
Finally, I should note that the EU has said it will put in place some mitigations for a few months after Brexit, so trucks should be able to keep moving even without permits. But that's a unilateral pledge, and not yet signed off on. We are 100% beholden to their good graces.
You can get background info about the ECMT permit system (including what the DoT has said about the situation in the event of a no-deal Brexit) at the link below.
