if you follow the "robots will take our car manufacturing jobs" reasoning back far enough you end up at "the act of creation, science, engineering, is violence" and that's kinda what i think when people talk about refusing to make AI for google etc
not in that they're wrong - you shouldn't do that for goog, it will be used mostly for harm - but sometimes it feels like the creation of node.js can be connected directly to a 15% reduction in staffing across the software industry
the industrial revolution in particular marked a moment when the creation of tools, flat-out, became driven primarily by the desire to not employ people, and if you view firing people as violence in our society then, well,
is there *any* tool you can make available to everyone that wont' immediately be repurposed to fire, imprison, disenfranchise and otherwise harm people?
this isn't actionable but i think about it a lot
