In light of the Klobuchar story I'm going to re-up a story I've told before. I was about 4 years into my time as an ER attending when Fire comes running int the ER with a 2 month old baby. Not intubated, no Iv and purple.

I was working the evening shift with an old timer who grandfathered in to my specialty. IM or FP, I cant remember. Trauma room, full resuscitation ensued. I asked the other doc to put in an IO while I intubated the baby, he refused because he didn’t know how.

Luckily one of the EMT’s volunteered. I worked this baby for a better part of an hour to no avail. Congenital heart defect, had just been discharged from Children’s Hosp. 2 days prior.

I go in to the family room and talk to the family and yes it’s fucking heartbreaking. I do my best to tell them that it is not their fault, apparently they had put the little one down to sleep, and let them into the room to see and hug their little one.

Then I go back out into the ER and apparently the shit has hit the fan. Tons of very sick patients haven’t been seen, a CHF that needs intubated, a GI bleed, etc…Where is my partner?

Who the fuck knows. So I clean up the mess and then all of a sudden I had a cadre a nurses wanting to speak to me.

Okay what? Oh yeah they wanted to tell me I was heartless because I didn’t cry when the baby died, newsflash that baby was dead when it hit the ER. I ask you, would they have done the same to a male physician?

I mean the shit was hitting the fan when I went back in, there was no time to cry because male physician was way over his head.

I had to clean it all up and deal with this BS. Sometimes women get angry that we have to deal with incompetence, handle the emergency and still be called a bitch.
So all you people who are baffled what it is like to straddle the woman/power fence, time to get educated.

Kind of done with being called out for being rightfully pissed off. Her Senate office, her rules. My ER, my rules.
