Our society is full of all the horrible immoral things we accuse the West of but we keep covering it up in the name of religion (which is ironic) and culture. So much abuse going on in our homes, our schools and on the streets but we keep looking the other way. #ArewaMeToo
It has been statistically proven that victims of abuse are more likely to be abusers themselves, hence the circle of abuse continues. We’re going to have a talk about the abuse meted on hawkers by mai guards as well. The practice of “yin juye” & get what you want. #ArewaMeToo
#ArewaMetoo Around 2000 immediately after finishing secondary school awaiting result, I formed the habit of sitting for hours with mai guards in our neighborhood. There was this mai guard from Niger republic called nicknamed Kango. He only guards uncompleted buildings...
#ArewaMetoo ...As soon as occupants move in, he leaves and finds another uncompleted building. I remember hawkers as young as 10 came to him and he goes in with them every freaking day. There was also this man Baba Maigadi who was over 60 at the time...
#ArewaMetoo ...I remember a teenage hawker once slapped him and I was jokingly told “yana shiga da ita baya ne idan yayi mata juye shi yasa ta raina shi”. 18yrs later, I feel so guilty for not doing anything about it at the time. Being 17 was no excuse...
#ArewaMetoo ...Who is going to speak up for these young teenage girls? We are collectively guilty as a society for turning the blind eye. Our leaders are guilty for not educating them. For not educating their parents as well...
#ArewaMetoo 4 not doing enough to bring them out of poverty so they stop hawking & putting themselves at risk. Our ulamas for discouraging women to speak up. Our journalists for not bringing these stories to the forefront. We’re a society full of pretense & religious hypocrisy.
