In essence the criticism that Trump doesn't give the sort of carefully-crafted responses to disasters and atrocities traditionally delivered by presidents is valid. He doesn't give a lot of "crafted" statements at all. It's one of the things his supporters like about him.
There are times when shoot-from-the-hip authenticity spells trouble for national politicians. It's a polarized country and it has been for a long, long time. You need a lot of speechwriters to pound your words into a mush that won't offend anyone, and even then you still do.
Some of the rap against Trump for "insensitivity" or "failing to bring the country together" comes from his tendency to speak extemporaneously. Most presidents don't do well in that format in high-pressure moments, very definitely including Barack Obama.
The problem with some criticism of Trump's "tone" is that nothing he could say would be good enough, and let's be honest, that has been true since he took office. Dems were 100% all-in on a strategy to paint him as an aberration to be "resisted," an illegitimate president.
The essence of the Dem strategy, once they snapped out of daydreams about sabotaging the Electoral College, was to cause chaos and then blame Trump for the chaotic atmosphere. They have rarely wavered from that strategy.
Trump, in turn, rarely wavers from his determination to punch back instead of "making peace" with Dems, as all Republicans are expected to do.
And let's be clear: Republicans are expected to MAKE CONCESSIONS to Dems in their perpetual peace offerings to the aggrieved. "Saying the right things" is good enough for Dems, but Republicans have to PAY UP in the name of "bipartisanship" and "national unity."
If Trump were a normal Republican, he would have long ago bowed to media pressure and dumped on his own constituents - the traditional first step of GOP submission - and then made policy concessions to the Dem agenda in a futile attempt to demonstrate bipartisanship.
Those are still the terms of surrender demanded by Dems and their media. No carefully crafted statement, no soaring speech, no Gettysburg Address from Trump could possibly satisfy his critics. Conservatives who think otherwise are deluding themselves and forgetting history.
Nothing less than massive policy concessions would even begin to sate the people yelling that Trump must "bring the country together," and you know damn well that would earn him only a tiny reprieve, because Dems are all-in on the "illegitimate president" strategy.
Let's remember that Dem demands for comity are coming from a party that just tried to smear a SCOTUS nominee as a serial rapist, heartlessly exploiting bitter national divisions, with no real objective at first beyond scoring political points from an inevitable confirmation.
I don't understand anyone on the right who could watch the Kavanaugh saga as a professional observer, watch the Dems fall all over themselves exploiting a murder for political gain, and conclude Trump could make peace by smoothing the rough edges of his blunt speech. /end
