@katemasters67 @LynnGreigMiller HI guys...feel like I have walked into a heavy discussion for a Sunday night. But I'll do my best. Firstly I should declare I am in no way, shape, or form, medically trained.
@katemasters67 @LynnGreigMiller To answer your question Kate on CPR training as part of the curriculum in Scotland. BHF has been working with Scottish local authorities to achieve this and we currently have 25 out of 32 committed to ensuring all pupils are trained in CPR before they leave school
@katemasters67 @LynnGreigMiller The map attached will show what local authorities have and haven't made the commitment. We expect by the end of February 28 out 32 will have committed as 3 councils have committees coming up with papers proposing a policy change.
@katemasters67 @LynnGreigMiller On the front of CPR training in schools and for the wider population. International comparisons in survival rates from CPR shows that Scotland and the UK are behind many of the leading centres.
@katemasters67 @LynnGreigMiller There is strong evidence to show that increasing the percentage of the population trained in CPR leads to increased survival rates.
@katemasters67 @LynnGreigMiller From 2001-2014 Denmark tripled survival rates from OHCA & one of the attributable factors was CPR being made mandatory on the curriculum. Initiation of Bystander CPR before arrival of EMS increased from 19.4% to 65.8%
@katemasters67 @LynnGreigMiller What has been most interesting in Denmark is that whilst survival tripled it has also been reported that 76 % of out-of-hospital cardiac arrest survivors who worked prior to the cardiac arrest incident returned to their previous work.
@katemasters67 @LynnGreigMiller The Danish model shows that increasing the rate of bystander CPR is not only about survival for survival sake but also about increasing survival with favourable neurological outcomes.
@katemasters67 @LynnGreigMiller lifeaftercardiacarrest.org Life After Cardiac arrest was developed as part of the Scottish Government's work in this area to look at the impact on both survivors, loved ones of people who had died, and those who had performed CPR. It might be worth looking at
@katemasters67 @LynnGreigMiller CPR training can't & shouldn't be offered in a manner that portrays it as 100 effective. Even in the best performing areas survival from OHCA is around 1 in 4. There for a discussion regarding this is prudent during training & part of the mental wellbeing of someone being trained
@katemasters67 @LynnGreigMiller It should be noted Scotland's survival rate of 1 in 12 is of those cases where resuscitation was attempted by an Ambulance crew. By increasing bystander CPR we'd hope to see that cohort increase however.
@katemasters67 @LynnGreigMiller For example in Scotland there are around 9000 OCHAs/year with 3500 of these having resuscitation attempts.
