1. Trump is promoting a call for "the investigators" (i.e. Mueller & his team) to be arrested. This is why I can't go along with @CoreyRobin's argument that Trump is not an authoritarian threat. These are dangerous words even if not acted on.
2. The usual response to this stuff is "Trump is a blowhard. He's not actually going to arrest Mueller. His threats are a sign of weakness, not authoritarianism." But in fact, a president making threats undermines democracy in a number of ways even if not acted on.
3. Trump is the standard bearer of one of America's two major parties, and enjoys overwhelming support of GOP. Both elected Republicans and ordinary GOP voters take their cues from Trump. If he says Mueller is a criminal, a certain subset of the population (30-40%) believe
4. Let's be optimistic & say only 30% of population believe full Trumpian line. Still, for 30% to buy into an unhinged conspiracy theory with no basis in fact (that Mueller & his team are criminals) is a big problem.
