I've been enjoying the range of makeup choices in #StarTrekDiscovery, suggesting characters doing their own makeup.

Michael: Neat smoky eye (Vulcan!)
Tilly: Just mascara & TV foundation.
Jett Reno: Zilch.
Number One: 1950s liquid eyeliner, foundation, coral lip & styled hair.
A lot of TV shows use subtle-but-flawless makeup & long wavy hair for most female characters, implying that every woman follows the same expert routine. I like that Discovery has a real range of looks, showcasing individual styles.
Discovery's male characters have a much more conservative range of hairstyles than the women - and no makeup. I think they should bring back the eyeshadow of the Original Series.
This wide range of personal styles is canonically consistent for Star Trek, BTW. Unlike military organizations where personal expression is discouraged, Starfleet requires you to wear a uniform but gives A LOT of leeway for hair & makeup.
The one time I remember Starfleet's ~fashion police~ coming into play is a TNG ep where Ro Laren is told to remove her ceremonial Bajoran earring. Worf constantly wears his Klingon sash, so this is clearly an anti-Bajoran microaggression.
P.S. Friendly reminder that Starfleet's uniform minidresses are canonically unisex & have been worn by men onscreen.
