#StarTrekPicard - A Rant.

After watching the most recent episode of #StarTrek #Picard I just feel I have to rage about this show in an overly-long Twitter thread where I put more thought into the series than the actual writers/producers of it did.

Be warned...
I was initially optimistic about #Picard. I think Michael Chabon is a great writer, I love Patrick Stewart, & I felt like the "course correction" we saw from Secret Hideout in S2 of #StarTrekDiscovery meant the show could be good.

But boy, was I wrong!
#Picard has been a MESS from the first episode. Bad plotting, horrendous dialogue, terrible characters, convoluted plot points, awful editing, & a complete disregard for both established #StarTrek lore & legacy characters has made this the WORST Trek series ever, IMHO.

We've always thought of Starfleet and the Federation as this wonderful, utopian society, and the events leading up to #StarTrekPicard have brought up a lot of "Starfleet would never..." comments in online discussion.

In the words of that FNN reporter, "Let's explore that."
Starfleet would never sanction the death of an alien race....

...except when they ordered Picard to exterminate the Borg at any opportunity. ("Descent")

#StarTrek #StarTrekPicard
The Federation would never abandon a people in need due to political pressure...

...except when they did just that to the colonists in the Cardassian DMZ, leading to the formation of the Maquis. ("Journey's End," "The Maquis," etc.)

As we get closer to Saturday I feel the need to say something to the fandom at large that I know will piss some people off or will come off as trying to dampen the hype but I think it needs saying. This will be long. /1 #StarTrekSDCC #StarTrekPicard #StarTrekDiscovery #StarTrek
I believe we're all hyped about #StarTrekPicard & are looking forward to seeing what's next for Picard! This is not a one or the other situation. One is not less of a fan if they look forward to this & enjoy #StarTrekDiscovery & are looking forward to new info about that too. /2
I say this because there are going to be ppl in this fandom or ppl trying to co-opt it that are about to show their asses off come Sat, acting like complete assholes. The phrases "true Trek", "STD", & "finally some good Trek" & the like are going to be spoken & typed by some. /3

The Current Research in Speculative Fiction is happening today @LivUni! I'll be tweeting with the hashtag #CRFS2019 for anyone who wants to follow along. Excited to hear from our fabulous lineup of speakers!
The conference opens with a keynote lecture from @DevarenneNicole: 'Primitives, Liars and Savages: British New Wave Science Fiction and the end of Empire in Africa.'
Devarenne reads John Christopher's 'The World in Winter' and JG Ballard's 'The Crystal World': novels both set in dystopian 'African' states.

A bit about the evolution of the recap for episode 8 of #StarTrekDiscovery - If Memory Serves. (Small Spoilers)

As I was cutting the episode I was wondering if we would revisit the footage from The Cage / The Menagerie and rewatched both multiple times. (1/4)
@CenterWillHold suggested that we attempt some sort of flashback for Pike at the beginning of the episode utilizing the TOS footage in a hyper stylized way. Ultimately, the flashback version, proved a bit too confusing. (2/4)
Upon viewing, EP Alex Kurtzman, suggested creating a recap using the TOS footage. I then incorporated the idea of also making this seem a flashback for Pike by using the match cut from Jeffrey Hunter’s Pike to @ansonmount’s Pike (3/4)

I've been enjoying the range of makeup choices in #StarTrekDiscovery, suggesting characters doing their own makeup.

Michael: Neat smoky eye (Vulcan!)
Tilly: Just mascara & TV foundation.
Jett Reno: Zilch.
Number One: 1950s liquid eyeliner, foundation, coral lip & styled hair.
A lot of TV shows use subtle-but-flawless makeup & long wavy hair for most female characters, implying that every woman follows the same expert routine. I like that Discovery has a real range of looks, showcasing individual styles.
Discovery's male characters have a much more conservative range of hairstyles than the women - and no makeup. I think they should bring back the eyeshadow of the Original Series.

@thejohnprice So they executed the Stopped Clock Maneuver?
@thejohnprice Okay, saw it. It's basically a more maturely written #OnceUponAStarTrek, which is still a pejorative but much improved for the more mature style. There were several moments where they had me and several where they lost me., along with missed opportunities.
@thejohnprice - The Saru assisted suicide thing was the biggest missed opportunity. They had a chance to have the #StarTrek Philosophical Conversation™ about it, but skipped it, which is weird because they only got to it with a super-contrived "I'm too weak to do it" seconds after he wasn't.

home & tired after a long day breaking S2 of #StarTrekDiscovery but I MADE A PROMISE so here's a thread explaining emperor georgiou's titles in episode 12, Vaulting Ambition.
"All Hail her most Imperial Majesty, Mother of the Fatherland, Overlord of Vulcan, Dominus of Kronos, Regina Andor, All Hail Philippa Georgiou Augustus Iaponius Centarius."

But what's it mean??!?
When we began digging into the Terrans last year, I had just read a newer history of Rome and was excited to use it as inspiration. (SPQR by Mary Beard, check it out.)

Here's some of the titles Roman Emperors used:
