Do you feel anxious about submitting your work to a peer-reviewed journal? Most of us grapple with internal voices that cast doubt on our work. Here’s one of my favorite ways to overcome that fear—hope it helps you! #AcademicTwitter #phdadvice 1
It’s a really simple “staggering” process. You just need two papers that are at different stages of the writing / rewriting process. 2 #AcademicTwitter #phdadvice
Paper 1 should be close to submission. How do you know? Maybe your committee or colleagues have suggested it’s close, or you have hit a wall & can’t figure out next steps (but feel proud of the paper & think there is a real contribution) #AcademicTwitter #phdadvice 3
Submit that somewhere and then immediately (after celebrating the submission with friends 🤜🤛) PIVOT to Paper 2, which may be in rougher shape or even just an outline (on paper or in your head). #AcademicTwitter #phdadvice 4
Pour your time and energy into Paper 2 with the goal of submitting it somewhere BEFORE you hear 👂 back from the editors about Paper 1. This helps you keep the ball rolling and also helps you avoid obsessing over the fate of Paper 1. Win, win. #AcademicTwitter #phdadvice 5
Ideally you will submit Paper 2 before hearing the decision on Paper 1. But sometimes Paper 2 needs a lil extra TLC, which may overlap with a decision on Paper 1. This is fine & pretty common, I think. The key 🔑 is to get Paper 2 into the pipeline #AcademicTwitter #phdadvice 6
Then, once you’ve submitted Paper 2, move back to Paper 1 and address criticism and concerns from reviewers and the editor with the goal of RE-SUBMITTING to the same journal or elsewhere BEFORE hearing back about Paper 2. And on and on it goes. #AcademicTwitter #phdadvice 7
In the end, staggering is all about keeping multiple projects in motion. I find that a lot of academic anxiety and angst comes from feeling stuck, like you’re not moving forward. This is one way to combat that feeling (which most of us grapple with). #AcademicTwitter #phdadvice 8
And most of all, remember that your brilliant work doesn’t do you or anyone any good if it’s sitting on your hard drive. Submit stuff, take rejections as a chance to improve, and keep it moving! Let’s get it 🙌🤜🤛 #AcademicTwitter #phdadvice 9
