Barry Diller is one of the more engaging and quotable interview subjects but there is nothing more frustrating than him being a) constantly interrupted b) asked mostly about things other than the companies he controls. Will pull out some of the good stuff. recode.net/2019/2/18/1822…
He makes a distinction between narrative media, using screens to tell a story. and using screens for "other purposes", then uses this framework to describe how QVC opened his eyes to technology convergence and the consumer internet
it's fun to compare his retelling of the story today to the real time documentation
Next Diller uses the narrative media vs tech framework to say how unique Netflix is because they successfully straddled both worlds. He also implicitly endorses aggregation theory and says Netflix won because they have all the subs and can outbid everyone.
The most quoted part of the interview is "Hollywood is irrelevant" but the point he was making is really interesting and important, as he traces the history of media. The large studios could always "extend their hegemony into everything else". But that era is over.
Kind of reminded me of @benedictevans post on tech and content. Content was king when Hollywood was king. Now, Hollywood is irrelevant because Hollywood can't buy its way into controlling the next thing. ben-evans.com/benedictevans/…
Anyway, Diller always has piercing insights into the businesses he knows well, he's just rarely asked about them.
