A New Jersey facility was feeding immigration detainees rotting, "slimy and discolored" food and keeping them in conditions that "pose serious health and safety risks," according to a report by the Department of Homeland Security Inspector General

DHS inspectors visited the facility, which was housing ICE detainees, last July. They found that "the food handling, in general, was so substandard that ICE and facility leadership had the kitchen manager replaced during our inspection"

A detainee found a guard's loaded gun in a bathroom he was cleaning and reported it to officials, who told him "not to discuss the matter with anyone else." ICE said it was never notified. This was the 4th time IN LESS THAN A YEAR the facility didn't report a detainee incident

DHS inspectors found "leaks in every housing unit" where men were sleeping. Two of the leaks dripped directly onto their beds. "Shower stalls were unsanitary." "Mattresses in such poor condition that detainees were using bed sheets to tie the seams."

This is in New Jersey.

"ICE standards require that all detainees be allowed outdoor recreation time," DHS says

But the facility didn't have any outdoor space. Instead, it had "glass enclosures" inside living areas "with *mesh cages* at the top to allow in outside air"
