It gives Home Secretaries a discretion which they probably can't be trusted with.

And as it becomes a norm to strip people of citizenship (exile by another name) it becomes hard to resist calls of "if X then why not Y"?
Logically, why shouldn't McDonnell's argument succeed?

It becomes politics not law, and Home Secretaries are particularly vulnerable to making politicised decisions.

I would consider taking the power away altogether given the mess that Javid appears to have made of it.

@stephenpollard Remember that the test for depriving someone of citizenship is extremely wide and vague

"if the Secretary of State is satisfied that deprivation is conducive to the public good"

That's it. And it's at least partly the Home Secretary's subjective opinion!
