Fascinating to see such a range of voices from across politics expressing disquiet about the Shamima Begum decision. Feels like not business as usual in a terrorism case
I was think this through today and wonder if the answer is to either remove the power from Home Secretaries altogether (unlikely) or perhaps remove it in part, so for example a judge has to approve any decision to revoke citizenship
Whatever the right answer, I think the level of criticism and concern here merits an independent investigation into deprivation of citizenship for example by the @HumanRightsCtte and/or @terrorwatchdog if they ever appoint a new one

Watch this, where he goes back on a press statement (clearly written for him not by him) on whether that mural was antisemitic. Always best to watch his interviews as he tells the truth there

Problem is, if Austin was a regular bully, & I have no reason to disbelieve Laura, it was even more of a misjudgment to discipline him
(a) at the apex of a fierce debate about antisemitism,
(b) for his conduct in calling it out,
(c) at the same time as non-bully Margaret Hodge
Why choose that moment, of all moments? If everyone knew he was a bully. No responsible organisation would have done it without considering the significant risk of victimisation.

Ian Austin MP was subjected, in my view, to a clear case of victimisation (within the meaning of the Equality Act) when disciplinary proceedings were initiated against him for complaining about antisemtism.

This is victimisation.

It is being treated less well (or punished) for, for example, complaining about discrimination.

@IanAustinMP made an entirely justifiable complaint and was taken through a months' long disciplinary process to attempt to punish him for doing so
@IanAustinMP The party claims it was all about his manner in shouting in Parliament.

But this was in the context of a fiercely contested debate over Labour attempting to write it's own definition of antisemitism.

I think one of the most damning things that can be said about the Home Secretary's Shamima Begum decision is that I don't know a single counter terrorism policy expert who thinks this is a good idea, not one. And believe me I know a lot of CT and CVE wonks.
Especially important to listen to British Muslim CVE experts, many have themselves come from former extremist backgrounds, all of them speaking out against a movement they see as a dangerous precedent for all people of mixed heritage.
Leaving aside the moral questions and legal implications of the case, from a purely national security perspective, literally nobody thinks this is a good idea.

But the Conservatives aren't listening.

Some countries - Russia, Kazakhstan and the US - have repatriated some or all of their women and children from Syria. They do this because they don’t belong there, they are unwanted by the Kurds who don’t have the resources to bring them to justice. Or care for their kids.
These women didn’t fight for the Islamic State, they didn’t do battle; but they did serve its cause and further its misery. They added to the myth of a religious paradise. They were a propaganda tool which helped recruitment.

Dad was detained in a #Texas detention center where @RAICESTEXAS consulted. Dad accepted a deportation to be quickly reunited w/ his infant child. However, the Dad was deported & NOT his child. The now 8-month-old baby has been in ORR custody for 4 months. #EndFamilySeparation
The Mom and Dad now have once weekly Skype calls with their 8-month-old baby. That's right, folks. They Skype with an infant. #EndFamilySeparation #FamiliesBelongTogether
