1/ There are now enough votes in the Texas Senate to block Secretary of State David Whitley’s nomination.

Whitley has been under fire over a controversial voter citizenship review that was based on deeply flawed data.

2/ In January, Texas loudly announced that counties should check on the citizenship of 95,000 registered voters.

Then, Texas quietly told counties that many of the voters flagged don't belong on that list.

3/3 In order to be confirmed, Whitley needs two-thirds of votes of senators present when his confirmation vote comes up.

So if all 11 of these senators are on the floor, he doesn't have the votes to be confirmed.

1/ A Honduran woman’s pregnancy ended in a stillbirth at an ICE detention center in South Texas last week.

Officials said DHS doesn’t count stillbirths as in-custody deaths — which drew condemnation from many. wapo.st/2EA4adH via @washingtonpost
2/ The woman, a migrant from Honduras, was arrested near Hidalgo on Feb. 18.

She was six months pregnant at the time.

Four days later, she went into labor and delivered a premature and unresponsive baby boy. wapo.st/2EA4adH

Biery repeatedly asking if SOS considered naturalized citizens could be on list of flagged voters.

AG lawyer: Focus was on noncitizens, not naturalized

Biery: If somebody was born here, they couldn't be a noncitizen so theres a different standard for native born & naturalized?
AG lawyer hammering point that county voter registrar has discretion to investigate flagged voters/take no action if no reason to doubt eligibility. But local officials have told me they can’t just ignore list. One said he’s gotten calls from public insisting on investigations.

At the Texas Capitol today, Texas Secretary of State David Whitley has his nominations committee hearing. He’s sure to be asked some tough questions about his office’s troubled effort to remove alleged noncitizens from the state’s voter rolls. #TXlege
Whitley is talking about his voter purge effort — which he’s referring to as list maintenance. He says his office has been training local election officials since the start. However, local officials have told me they’ve felt lost on how to verify the state’s list.
Democratic State Sen. Kirk Watson asks about the accuracy of the voter list, Whitley says it’s not wrong, “it’s collaborative.”

When NC passed monster voter suppression law court said targeted black voters “with almost surgical precision” Tom Farr was hired by GOP to defend it. He also defended “among the largest racial gerrymanders ever encountered by a federal court.”

1927: Texas Banker's Assn. responds to rash of bank robberies (3-4/day) by offering $5K reward for shooting a bank robber in the act.
Group of 4 criminals plan December 1927 heist of Cisco, TX bank:
1. Robert Hill
2. Harry Helms
3. Marshall Ratliff
4. Louis Davis
Ratliff was veteran bank robber, Helms and Hill he knew from Huntsville prison.
Davis was a cousin of Helms brought in because safe cracker got flu.
Ratliff borrows a Santa Claus suit from boarding house, dropped off blocks away, followed by children as decoy for entry of the 4 men through alley entrance of bank.
