I’m going to do the unpopular here: defend @SenFeinstein a) do the kids, who’re rightly concerned abt climate change, actually know what’s in #NGD resolution? Do they know the legislative process? Perhaps it’s unfair to ask them to understand how a bill becomes a law but if 1/
They’re going to care enough abt the enviro, then they should book up on legislative process bec that actually matters here. B) @AOC @SenMarkey did NOT intro actual legislative fixes to address climate change. There isn’t a SINGLE policy proscription in their resolutions. 2/
Instead they intro’d goals. Do the kids know what the goals are? Do they know how we’re going to achieve those goals through legislation? Do they know the GOP controls the Senate & will not debate legislation to achieve these goals as long as they have the majority? Because 3/
If they don’t know those things, this stunt they pulled (& will continue to pull on other Senators their chaperones seem not liberal enough) was a pathetic charade. TBC I admire them for wanting to fix the problem. I want to too. But they’re being used a political pawns by the 4/
Adults over at @sunrisemvmt. C) in contrast, the #Parkland kids leading the efforts to enact gun safety legislation support actual legislation. I’m willing to bet if you asked any of them what they supported, you’d get specific details supported by actual legislation they’ve 5/
Asked a Member/Senator to introduce. Further I’m willing to bet that they care as passionately about gun safety as the Sunrise kids care abt climate change. Both are ACTUAL national emergencies IMHO & both should be addressed legislatively & politically. And that leads me to 6/
A final few thoughts. The image of Sunrise vs Feinstein is a generational gap that’s existed well forever. Kids don’t like to be preached to by old people and old people know way more than kids. The same can be said for the opposite. Kids are armed w new knowledge and passion 7/
About serious matters while older people have already been there/done that from their vast experiences. Do the kids care & is it genuine? Absolutely. Do they know what they’re talking about legislatively/politically? Nope they don’t have a clue. Does feinstein care about our 8/
Climate crisis? Yeh. Her legislative record & actions supporting perhaps the cleaner most progressive climate state (CA) is loud and clear. And that leads me to my final point. Sunrise isn’t doing this bec Feinstein isn’t good on climate change. They’re doing this bec they’re 9/
Seeming her not progressive enough on other issues. They’re hell bent/determined to go after EVERY Democrat THEY deem insufficient on whatever issue they demand action on. That’s a problem. And they used kids as their mouthpieces to go after a feinstein & will continue this 10/
Tactic. I get it. The Parkland kids were attacked in their school by a domestic terrorist & they watched as their friends were murdered in the one place they should’ve been safe: their school. So they rose up organically, organized a movement & got legislation intro’d that is 11/
Actually getting marked up & will most likely pass the House. On the contrary, Sunrise wasn’t organized by kids concerned about climate change. It’s organized by AOC forces who believe like most Americans we must address this crisis now not later. Who then used kids as pawns 12/
To attack a Senator w a great record on climate change. That’s a shame. Did Feinstein do herself any favors? Nope. The optics here are awful. But know this: both Feinstein & Sunrise could’ve worked together to accomplish something in GOP-led Senate but the latter screwed the 13/
Pooch here by orchestrating another attack on yet another Democrat. They’re not doing to Susan Collins who’s in cycle and can be defeated. Or for that matter any of the Republicans who’d actually help them. Sunrise is engaged in some sort of effd up political purity testing 14/
Of Democrats. I know I’ll be attacked for this thread. Happy to defend it. But know this: Sunrise and their elected AOC acolytes have a weak spot. It’s called a Democratic primary. Yes they too can be primaried. And they should be if all they want is to burn down other Dems. 15/
Politics is ALWAYS two-way Street. What’s good for the goose...and more importantly, if they actually WANT to fix climate change, then why not introduce actual legislation instead of a resolution that while commendable means nothing. Then they’d have something to walk into 16/
A senator’s office and demand action on instead of some made for tv mini docu with concerned kids as pawns for puritanical socialist adults. They’d get much further AND have some actual street cred w those senators/members. End.
