The United States is gravely concerned by reports that prosecutors in Turkey moved to indict 16 civil society, media, and business leaders. Exercising the right to freedom of expression should not result in an aggravated life sentence.
The ability to exercise the rights to freedom of expression, peaceful assembly, and association is fundamental to any healthy democracy. We urge Turkey to respect these freedoms and to release all those held arbitrarily.

Venezuela is in crisis. But like the run-up to Vietnam, Iraq, Libya and so many other bloody US foreign policy disasters, we're being bombarded with a one-sided, simplistic, often false narrative. No one claims Venezuela is a threat to us... but they do have LOTS of oil.
Chickenhawks like John Bolton are saying the quiet part out loud on why the ruling class should support the Venezuela coup: “It will make a big difference to the US economically if we could have American oil companies really invest in & produce the oil capabilities in Venezuela."

I actually worked a bit on polling for the Peres campaign mentioned in the article. It was a heartbreaking loss, but we had no idea what it would lead to. /thread
In politics (and in political consulting) there is a fundamental conflict between the mercenaries and the idealists. People sometimes start out as idealists and turn into mercenaries. In the US, on the Democratic side there are plenty of both.
On the Republican side, it seems like the mercenaries have completely taken over. (Happy to hear from Republicans who see it otherwise). This can result in Rs running effective campaigns while Ds are arguing over ideology (or worse, signals of ideological purity).
