I mean to rank the films of 2018 on the blog, but I ran out of time from being in Minnesota. So here we go:

1) Roma--simply a great film and also extremely important for having an indigenous star in an extremely racist Mexico.

2) Sorry to Bother You--Boots Riley is awesome

3) Private Life--Tamara Jenkins is a great writer and director, the actors were amazing, this is the most underrated film of 2018.

4) Shoplifters. Kore-eda at his best is an amazing director

5) Cold War--beautiful, powerful

6) BlacKKKlansman--Sure, it's a big mess in some ways and yes, it's kind of tone deaf for making a freaking cop the hero, but at the same time, it's a great piece of political entertainment for the masses.

7) The Favourite--Simply put, an extremely entertaining film.

8) Isle of Dogs--Despite Anderson's anti-cat propaganda, as charming as ever

9) Leave No Trace--a really solid little film about people on the margins in Oregon. Watch this movie.

10) Widows--I can't help but think of this as slightly disappointing, but I wonder if it will age better as it goes. Solid, but also wildly implausible.

11) Ballad of Buster Scruggs--hugely inconsistent between segments, best were great, worst were, uh, not.

12) Can You Ever Forgive Me?--Fine, obviously an Oscar-bait kind of film, but smart and largely entertaining.

13) Black Panther--Politically, yes, it is good. The plot...well....

14) Won't You Be My Neighbor--a solid documentary about a fairly easy subject to make a decent doc about

15) Vice--puke

There are of course lots of other movies I wished I watched.
