Nearly *HALF* of the 700,000 people behind bars in U.S. jails -- many of them there because they can't afford money bail -- are people with mental illness.

@SteveCollNY @NewYorker Note: It's not just people with mental illness being warehoused in U.S. jails (and prisons). It's people with disabilities broadly.

People behind bars in U.S. jails & prisons are more than 3x as likely to have a disability than the general population: americanprogress.org/issues/crimina…
Meanwhile: Poor conditions and inadequate access to health care & mental health treatment can not only exacerbate existing conditions -- but also cause disabilities & health conditions people didn't have prior to incarceration.
And the kicker: Many inmates with disabilities are held in solitary confinement—reportedly, in many cases, for their own protection, due to a lack of appropriate alternative accommodations.

Few experiences are as likely to cause or exacerbate psychological distress as solitary.
