In celebration of Black History Month, today I will honor five Pennsylvania innovators for their dedication to creating innovative solutions to the Nation’s most pressing issues and for their work in inspiring the next generation of leaders.
Joan Myers Brown is an artist and entrepreneur. She is founder of @PhiladancoC and The Philadelphia School of Dance Arts and serves as honorary chairperson for the
International Association of Blacks in Dance, an organization she established in 1991.
Rev. Dr. Lorina Marshall-Blake is president of the @ibxfdn, leading
strategic, programmatic and operational efforts to fulfill the Foundation’s mission to lead sustainable solutions that improve the health and wellness of the community.
Sulaiman W. Rahman is the founder and CEO of @DiverseForce, a strategic human capital solutions firm that specializes in cultivating diverse leadership pipelines and ecosystems in the public, private and
philanthropic sectors.
Rakia Reynolds is the Founder and CEO of @SkaiBlueMedia, an award winning multimedia communications agency. Her team works with lifestyle, technology, non-profit, entrepreneurs and brands, and has offices in Philadelphia and New York.

Around the country, seventy-one percent of parents of children under age 18 say it is a problem to find quality, affordable child care in their area.
In an effort to help ease the burden and raise awareness for legislation aimed at tackling the nation’s child care crisis, I’m joining with working mothers to call for swift passage of the Child Care for Working Families Act.
I also announced my introduction of the Child and Dependent Care Tax Credit Enhancement Act.

This is deeply personal for our household because @MrProfChanda’s family survived the White Terror, sometimes with enormous personal sacrifice. Uncles went into hiding; language was hidden at home. It is no wonder we bonded early on over a shared hatred for colonialism.

BLACK HISTORY MONTH. This thread acknowledging & honoring Black contributions & representations in these genres will be done in different "categories." "Those Before Us..." will focus on real persons who have since passed on. "Present Day" will be about real persons who are
still living; even if they have not worked/appeared in these mediums recently. "Fictional Character" will be just that- the complex & complicated portrayals of African/Black characters in fiction. Finally, there will be every so often throughout the thread- "Futures So Bright"

Lets start w/ Obama. He is a unicorn! Everything he brought to the table in 2008 is hard, if not impossible, to replicate. Not to mention even *he* had to work to get black voters in the primary.

If blk support wasnt automatic for him, it wont be for Harris and Booker 2/?
Im sure many of us have heard some variation of “they [will/have] vote[d] for ::inset blk pol here:: because [s]he’s black” to explain black voting behavior.

This drastically oversimplifies black political behavior. Our use of race us much more complex than that... 3/?

Black History Month is by no means all about slavery, but it does provide an opportunity to reflect on how vast of an institution it was. It was massive.

12.5 million people were shipped across the Middle Passage & a quarter of them were children. 10.7 million people survived.
The number of enslaved Africans brought through the Middle Passage is equivalent to the entire population of Pennsylvania today. Consider how expansive that is. How colossal the entire slave trading industry was.
I think ppl can have a difficult time conceptualizing how many ppl were brought across the Atlantic Ocean *in ships*

More than 20,000 trips took place in the transatlantic slave trade. Tens of millions of people brought across the ocean in wooden ships. It’s wild to think about.
