Today marks the beginning of Black History Month, a time to honor those who brought our nation a little closer to equality and our families a little closer to prosperity. 1x
I often highlight the work still to be done. Work on voting rights, education access, health outcomes, and more. But today I want to celebrate the African American history-makers we do not always remember. 2/x
Like Bessie Coleman, who took to the skies as a pilot when few women - let alone Black women- knew how to fly. The first Black woman pilot, she dreamed of one day opening a flight school so others could soar. 3/x
Or Claudette Colvin, who was only fifteen when she refused to give her seat up on a segregated bus nine months before the Montgomery Bus Boycotts. 4/x
Matthew Henson was the first African American Arctic explorer. Violette Neatley Anderson was the first African American woman to practice law in front of the Supreme Court. Guion Bluford was the first Black NASA astronaut. 5/x
These are just some the oft-unsung heroes who have pushed us towards greatness and broken down barriers one at a time. This month, we honor their work and their legacy. 6/x
