President Trump, Ivanka, and Kushner's lawyer Abbe Lowell all said Kushner went through the standard process. Ivanka's statement was just three weeks ago nytimes.com/2019/02/08/us/…
Trump wanted a senior advisor whose only credential was being his son in law. He had no specific expertise to merit the position, nor any prior government experience, and when intel officials worried Kushner could be compromised by foreign influence, Trump overrode them.
Now there's a paper trail, which seems like a big deal.
